CAREER TESTING FAQ

1) Q: What is career testing?

A: Career tests are a helpful tool that can help you explore career and school options. Career tests are designed to measure different aspects of yourself as they relate to your career and academic prospects. The results you obtain from career testing can provide you with additional information about yourself, suggest new career or school ideas, and/or confirm options you may have already been considering.

2) Q: Will career testing tell me what I am meant to do with the rest of my life?

A: No, career tests are not a “magic crystal ball” that can dictate what career is the “right” one to pursue. Career tests can help you to assess and better understand your interests and work preferences, while also understanding how these elements complement the current Canadian labour market trends.

3) Q: Is career testing right for everybody?

A: Not necessarily. If you are unsure whether to register for career testing, please meet with a Job Search Counsellor during our daily scheduled Drop-In period (Monday to Friday, 11am – 12noon).

4) Q: What tests are used for career testing?

A: At YES, we use the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) as well as the Self-Directed Search (SDS) which is based on the Holland Code (similar to the theory used in the Strong Interest Inventory).

5) Q: Is career testing done in English or French?

A: All career testing (administration of tests and interpretation sessions) is performed in English.

6) Q: How is career testing at YES different than completing the free online career tests I see advertised?

A:
In contrast to the career tests used at YES, many free online assessments provide little to no proof of their accuracy, validity, and reliability. If you are unsure whether career testing is the right step for you, do feel free to drop-in during our daily scheduled Drop-In period to discuss your concerns with a Job Search Counsellor.

7) Q: How do I book a career testing appointment?

A: You can book a career testing appointment by calling the front desk directly (514-878-9788) or in-person during our regular office hours (Monday to Friday, 9am – 5pm).

8) Q: When can I come in for career testing?

A: Career tests are administered during the morning (beginning at 9am) and interpretation sessions are booked during regular office hours.

9) Q: Can I drop in for career testing?

A: Career testing is not completed on a drop-in basis; however, you can register for Career Testing by dropping by our centre during regular office hours.

10) Q: I have never been to YES before. Do I have to attend the “Jump Start Your Job Search” Orientation Workshop in order to register for career testing?

A: Although attendance at the “Jump Start Your Job Search” Orientation Workshop is not mandatory, we strongly recommend that you attend this workshop before registering for career testing.

11) Q: I work full time. Am I eligible to complete career testing?

A: Yes; however, all career testing (administration and interpretation sessions) is only conducted during regular office hours (see Questions #8, #18, and #19 for additional information.)

12) Q: I am a full-time student. Am I eligible to complete career testing?

A:
Yes; however, all career testing (administration and interpretation sessions) is only conducted during regular office hours.

13) Q: How much does career testing cost?

A: Career testing is offered on an individually-based sliding scale fee with a maximum fee of $40. Please contact the front desk directly for pricing-related information.

14) Q: What is covered in the price of career testing?

A: The price for career testing includes the administration of the MBTI and the SDS, as well as one-on-one interpretation sessions with a qualified career counsellor (see Question #19 for additional information.)

15) Q: What methods of payment are accepted for career testing?

A: YES accepts cash and credit cards.

16) Q: I paid for career testing, but changed my mind. Can I have a refund?

A: Yes. A full refund is available if YES is notified within a minimum of two business days of the career testing administration session. Refunds will only be issued in the form of initial payment and no refunds will be provided once career tests have been administered.

17) Q: Do I get to keep my career test results?

A: Yes. A paper copy will also be kept at the YES office.

18) Q: How long will career testing take?

A: We encourage clients to reserve approximately 90 minutes to complete the career tests; however, there is no time limit (see Question #19 for additional information.)

19) Q: How long will the career testing interpretation sessions take?

A: Typically, two 1-hour interpretation sessions are needed; however, additional sessions can be booked if further exploration is needed (see Question #18 for additional information.)

20) Q: Can I complete the career tests and have my results interpreted in one day?

A: No. Interpreting the results of career tests takes time and for that reason cannot be performed on the same day that the career tests are administered. However, please note that all career testing interpretation sessions must be booked within 45 days of the initial career testing administration date. After 45 days, all career test results will be destroyed.

21) Q: What if I miss a career testing session?

A: If you are unable to attend a career testing session, you must give 24 hours notice to the YES office or to your assigned Job Search Counsellor. Please note that if you do not keep 3 consecutive career testing administration/interpretation sessions without notifying the YES office, all subsequent sessions will be cancelled.

22) Q: I am planning on moving away from Montreal. Can I come in for career testing?

A: All Career Testing interpretation sessions must be booked within 45 days of the initial career testing administration date, so it will depend on your timing.

23) Q: What is the difference between the Self-Assessment Workshop and career testing?

A: During the Self-Assessment Workshop, you will clarify your personality preferences and work interests, learn how these elements can be used to focus on career options, and explore which career paths best suit your personality and interests. You will additionally examine your values, core beliefs, and skills. In contrast to the group-based Self-Assessment Workshop, career testing is completed individually and features the usage of standardized career tests, rather than exercises designed to promote the self-assessment process. There is no cost associated with the workshop; however, fees do apply for career testing.

24) Q: Do I have to attend the “Jump Start Your Job Search” Orientation Workshop before I attend the Self-Assessment Workshop?

A: Yes, the “Jump Start Your Job Search” Orientation Workshop is mandatory before registering for the Self-Assessment Workshop.

25) Q: Can I complete career testing as well as attend the Self-Assessment Workshop? Which one should I do first?

A: Yes, you can complete career testing as well as attend the Self-Assessment Workshop. These activities can be done in whatever order you choose.

26) Q: What if I still have questions regarding career testing?

A: If you would like additional information regarding career testing, please contact the front desk directly (514-878-9788 or at info@yesmontreal.ca). If you would like to speak to a Job Search Counsellor directly, we encourage you to drop in during our daily scheduled Drop-In period.
