Stay tuned to this page for photos and see you next year for the 11th Annual YES Artists Conference
 |
Monday, June 7, 2010 (9:00 AM – 5:00 PM)
Centaur Theatre 453 St. François-Xavier
Montreal |
Join us for a day of inspiration and information for
artist entrepreneurs from all artistic disciplines |
| |
Creativity, talent and a desire for self-expression are essential to being an artist, but making a living and growing as an artist also requires commitment, business skills and a strategic approach. The artistic milieu is as competitive and challenging as the business world or the job market, so in order to make your mark, you will be required to distinguish yourself not only through your work, but also through entrepreneurial efforts.
This conference will help you find the tools you need to succeed.

A true Montreal legend...
Oliver Jones is one of Canada's finest and most renowned Jazz musicians. His six-decade career intertwines with that of the very proud history of jazz in his native Montreal - the thriving city that also produced the late Oscar Peterson, Oliver's life-long friend and one of his influences.
Oliver was born and raised in the predominately working-class district of Saint Henri in Montreal, several blocks from Peterson. Young Oliver would sit on Peterson's porch listening to his mentor practice and it was Oscar's sister, Daisy who would become Oliver's first piano teacher, continuing on for the next twelve years. These lessons solidified young Jones' skills, which were already considerable; Oliver was performing publicly at the age of five and was just nine years old when he had his first nightclub appearance.
Oliver Jones’ six-decade musical career has been rich and varied. His classical music education was followed by stints at Montreal’s Café St-Michel, enthralling patrons with his acrobatic piano stunts. From his teens to his early twenties, Jones could play anything from swing to rock-n-roll; in those days playing jazz was not considered a viable career.
YES is honoured to have Mr. Jones recount his remarkable career during his Keynote Address at the 10th Annual YES Artists’ Conference.

KATIE MALLOCH |
|
| |
Katie began working at the CBC in 1972 on an array of projects. With her first love being jazz, it came naturally when she and producer Alain de Grosbois teamed up in 1983 to create Jazz Beat, a network radio show that combined discs and live recordings. Currently, Katie continues her love affair with jazz as the weekday host of CBC Radio 2’s Tonic, giving her the chance to mingle jazz with some of her other favourite types of music. "The show also features latin, soul, and movie music, everything from Tony Bennett to film noir themes, from Erykah Badu to Dexter Gordon. It can be boppish or funky or very romantic, but it MUST have heart and soul."
